I have experienced numerous minor earthquakes while living in Tokyo and even had the unfortunate experience of "The Great Hanshin earthquake (阪神・淡路大震災 Hanshin Awaji daishinsai), or Kobe earthquake," when I resided in Osaka. The Great Hanshin Earthquake occurred on "January 17, 1995 at 05:46:53 JST (January 16 at 20:46:53 UTC) in the southern part of Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, known as Hanshin. It measured 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale and 7 on the JMA Shindo intensity scale." The earthquake registered a 4 in my area. Witnessing the panic, destruction, and chaos that followed taught many to be as prepared as possible for natural disasters in Japan. Here is a link to earthquake and tsunami warnings.Additionally, you can download "the Tokyo Metropolitan Government manual, “Disaster Preparedness Tokyo” (Tokyo Bousai*), to help households get fully prepared for an earthquake directly hitting Tokyo and other various disasters. “Disaster Preparedness Tokyo” is tailored to the various local features of Tokyo, its urban structure, and the lifestyles of its residents, and contains easy-to-understand information on how to prepare for and respond to a disaster. This information will be useful now and in the event of an emergency. *“Bousai” is Japanese for “disaster preparedness”
