Here is a report (with video) from tech entrepreneur and Dream and Hustle blogger, Ed Dunn. Ed visited Tokyo to network, attend Hacker Space Tokyo and discuss life and business in Japan with Terri MacMillan of Modern Media Japan.

[Dream and Hustle]You best believe when I was in Tokyo, I’m going to talk to people and make connects. When I was planning this trip, I got in touch with plenty of people off Facebook and other resources who I can meet when I touchdown in Tokyo. I have to get a quick shout out to all of the people I communicated with via Black Tokyo and on Facebook who looked out for a brotha and I will do that in a separate blog posting when I wrap this episode up. One of the people I got to meet was a local entrepreneur in Tokyo and fellow techie Terri MacMillan who runs Modern Media Japan. You best believe when I was in Tokyo, I’m going to talk to people and make connects. Excellent interview. I’m actually inspired to hop on a plane and head back to Japan. Networking with like minded individuals is an extremely difficult thing to do. But when you find them you stay in touch and keep working those contacts. My last trip to Japan was back in May of this year and I had a decent size list of contacts, so once I stepped off the plane I pretty much hit the ground running. With my trusty laptop and a rental “keitai,” I immediately started working my contacts. I was fortunate enough to crash at a friends place in Shizuoka and with my rail pass in hand I was making that “Shikansen” run to Tokyo (45 min from Mishima station to Tokyo). The cool thing is that when I walked out the front door of my friends place the first thing I saw was Mt. Fuji. Now I gotta’ tell you looking at Mt. Fuji every morning definitely sets the tone of your day. One of the most incredible views I have ever seen.
Prior to my trip I had discovered the “Black Tokyo” Blog and “Black Professionals in Tokyo” networking site. One of the first people I met when I arrived in Tokyo was Henry Seals of Black Professionals in Tokyo. I contacted Henry and mentioned I was planning a trip to Japan and if he had time I would like to meet for lunch. Luckily our schedules worked out and he told me to meet him at the bronze “Hachikō” (famous dog statue) near the exit of the Shibuya Station.
Now I have heard of the statue and I am familiar with the story behind it. But I thought it would be a very large statue. So I’m wondering around looking for a large statue of a Akita dog, but it turned out to be much smaller than I thought. So I finally find the statue hidden behind a large group of people smoking and I find Henry. During lunch we had a long conversation about life in Japan, the economy and everything in-between. He mentioned that the Black Professionals in Tokyo events were a great place to meet like minded people to network and brainstorm ideals. So keep working those contacts and keep hustling.

What’s good people?!! I’m an ex- pro boxer turned 10 year music producer and single father of a 10 year old half asian girl. My daughter has always been intreeged with Japan and is very much aware of her Asian roots. So… I thought I might give Japan a visit, but I don’t know anyone!! I would be greatful if any brotha or sista could reach out to me and help me get prepared for this adventure. I would like to stay for a year. I need to know about schools for my daughter, average cost of living, and how could I get onto business for what I have to offer. Any input from anyone would be wonderful!!
