“This emergency message is being issued to alert U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Okinawa and Southern Japan (to include Kyushu and Shikoku), that as of 9:45 am (local time) on Friday, July 15, Typhoon Ma-on was located approximately 250 nautical miles southeast of Iwo To, Japan. Typhoon Ma-on is expected to track generally westward and intensify at a steady pace as it moves over warm water. Typhoon Ma-on is predicted to reach the Japanese islands of Shikoku and Kyushu on Monday July 18 or Tuesday July 19. The Japan Meteorological Agency reports that the maximum sustained wind speed near the center of the storm is 85 knots (98 mph) with gusts of 125 knots (144 mph).

We will continue to monitor Typhoon Ma-on’s track and will issue updated messages as appropriate.  Please monitor the typhoon’s track by listening to the radio or watching television. Locate shelter, monitor media reports, and follow all official instructions.  Carry your travel documents at all times (i.e. U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate, picture ID’s, etc.) or secure them in a safe, waterproof location.  You should also contact friends and family in the United States with updates about your whereabouts.
